Travelling to Mansfield Recreation Reserve, the Tigers overcame a slow start to lead at the final change, but were unable to finish off the strong fightback in the 3.5 (23) to 8.7 (55) defeat.
Cobram’s sluggish start saw it head into the first break without a score on the board, trailing the Eagles by 13 points, although the Tigers made the most of their opportunities in the second term to kick two straight while Mansfield managed 1.2 from its scoring shots.
The Tigers closed the margin down somewhat, but still entered the rooms at half time trailing 2.0 (12) to 3.3 (21), and had plenty of work to do in the third term if they were to hit the front.
And while hit the front they did, the pinpoint accuracy they enjoyed in the second term deserted them in the third, as opportunities to push the margin out even further went begging.
Restricting Manfield to a single behind, Cobram dominated proceedings, but a return of 1.5 didn’t see the Tigers capitalise fully on that ascendency, as they held a slender one-point advantage at the final change, up 3.5 (23) to Mansfield’s 3.4 (22).
The inability to make the most of their chances came back to bit the Tigers in the final term, too, as the Eagles booted five goals to none in a final quarter blitz to deny the visitors the win.
Casey Homewood was named Cobram’s best in the win, closely followed by Miliana Naicori and Trinny Preer, while both Liz Young and Bethany Hibma were also influential.
Charlotte Artavilla-Bennett continued her streak of scoring in every game she has played this season, adding two goals, while skipper Tameisha Kelly added one.
Despite the loss, Cobram remains in third spot on the ladder with a 2-2 record from four games, and will look to improve to a positive record again when taking on Rumbalara this weekend at Scott Oval.
In other round four matches, Rumbalara got back to winning ways with a 57-point victory over the Shepp Swans at Rumbalara Recreation Reserve, keeping the visitors goalless in the 7.17 (59) to 0.2 (2) win.
Moama edged out a 5.5 (35) to 3.2 (20) victory against Tatura, while, Shepparton United was awarded the maximum points after Nathalia forfeited the fixture that had been listed in round four.
This set of results leaves Shepparton United in pole position in the ladder at this stage in the campaign, with Moama trailing just behind courtesy of an inferior percentage despite also boasting an unbeaten start to the term.
