Bowls notes

March 09, 2018

Cobram’s division one side had a convincing win against Barooga Sports in the qualifying final of Murray Bowls Division Saturday pennant played at Wunghnu last Saturday.

Following on from a six-shot win in the last home-and-away match, Cobram followed up by winning all rinks for a 34-shot win, 102-68.

Bob Griffiths defeated Peter Ware 27-15, Steve Tatnall beat Ray Emerson 21-16, Ray Parks was too good for Brett Wright 30-14 and Greg Dunn saw off Geoff Mitchell 24-23.

The win puts Cobram straight into the grand final, where it will play the winner of the Numurkah Golf and Barooga Sports match to be played Saturday.

Division two also had a win, defeating Berrigan 142-62 in the elimination final.

On Saturday it will face Barooga Sports, who lost its qualifying final against the strong Strathmerton side.

Friday division one lost to Tocumwal Golf by 21 shots in the qualifying final. Next Friday at Strathmerton it plays Numurkah Golf for a place in the grand final.

Teams as follows: 9.45am roll-up, 10am start.

Division one, v Numurkah Golf at Strathmerton: M. McDonald (s), K. Baldacchino, A. Vinecombe, C. Dunne; B. Smethurst (s), B. Turner, G. Murphy, J. Mynard; I. Saunders (s), K. Faulkner, B. Ingram, B. Quinane. Manager: K. Baldacchino. Emergencies: C. Thomas, C. Doherty.

It was not a great start to the finals with all the sides having the double chance losing, but the one side without the double chance needed to win and it did.

Division one lost to Cobram by 32 shots. Although it looks bad, the team is confident it can make some changes to the structure of the rinks and bounce back.

This week division one plays Numurkah Golf and at time of writing the venues had not been announced.

Division two lost to Strathmerton 133-71, which was not a surprising result as Strathmerton is the firm favourite to win division two.

Three rinks lost with only Archie Ellis and his team winning a rink.

The players need to regroup and put their heads down for this week’s clash with Cobram.

Division three had to win to stay in the finals and it did, beating Finley RSC 72-58. This week it will meet Tocumwal Golf (2), who had a very close battle with Finley, winning by two shots.

Division four lost to top side Numurkah 47-31 but has a chance to redeem itself this week as it too had the second chance and will meet Finley in a must-win encounter.

Training is Wednesday afternoon with a sausage sizzle to follow.

Club members are encouraged to invite non-bowlers down to a three-week barefoot bowls competition at 6pm on Fridays. Entry is for non-bowlers only and depending on numbers some good prize money will be available. Contact Ray Emerson or Geoff Mitchell for details.

Trade day this past week was at Numurkah and the team from Yarrawonga consisting of Bob, Peter and Kevin won with 3 wins and Steve (Spanner) Brooks , Ray (never wrong) Wright and Des Toohey took the runners-up prize with three wins and 38 points.

Best game winning teams were: first game, Pat Quinane and team from Cobram with 15 shots up; second game, Tony Smith and team from Picola with eight shots up; third game, Lucky Phil and team from Numurkah with 13 shots up; and best fourth game, Peter Buller, Chris Ward and Frank Dunkley with 16 shots up.

Keith’s Friday had 32 bowlers attending in warm but pleasant conditions, enjoying two games of three-bowl triples. Winners of the day were Ray Wright and Frank Liberg with +19, with Archie Ellis and Peter Linquist runners-up with +15.

Best first game went to Ron Quinn and John Bruce with +4 with best second game winners being Ken Anderson and Nev Walsh with +11.

The jackpot went off! The jackpot of $318 was won by two pairs, Heather Crosthwaite and Carol Cox, plus Kevin Kennedy and Gavan Cullen, who shared the money and good luck to them. Next week the jackpot will start at $63.50.
