Echuca United struggled offensively against Eaglehawk in the Central Victoria Football League under-18 girls competition, the contending Hawks keeping the locals in check at the weekend.

The Eagles were in action on home turf at Echuca South Recreation Reserve on Sunday and, while both sides were held to low scores for most of the game, the more-favoured Eaglehawk broke free in the final term to record a 5.6 (36) to 1.3 (9) victory.

The Hawks kicked the only goals of the first half, slotting one in each quarter to lead 2.2 to 0.1 at the main break.

United had a strong third period, keeping the visitor to a point and kicking its first major to cut the lead to a goal, 9-15 heading into the fourth.

However, Eaglehawk had more in the tank late on, kicking three unanswered to seal the win.

The result keeps Echuca United in eighth with a 3-1-7 record, although the Eagles still have the opportunity to move up over the final three weeks, trailing sixth by two points.

Eaglehawk hangs on to second spot with the win.

Echuca United goes back on the road on Sunday, taking on Sandhurst at Queen Elizabeth Oval, having the opportunity to move above the opposition with a win.
