Cobram has defeated Congupna in round 16 of the Murray Football League, handing The Road its first loss this season, and its first defeat since its agonising grand final day against the Tigers in 2025.
It was another thrilling encounter between the blockbuster clubs, Cobram producing a defensive masterclass in the final term to reverse a seven-point three-quarter-time deficit into their favour by the final siren.
A four-goal term kicked Congupna ahead by 12 points at the first change, as regular customers Robbie Mifka and Daniel Schaper shopped for their opening goals of the day.
Inaccuracy was lamented by the Tigers in the second quarter, booting 2.5 to Congupna’s 3.1 to trail by 14 at the main break, 7.4 (46) to 4.8 (32).
Such wastefulness in front of goal continued in the second half, but Cobram had battened down the defensive hatches to give the boys in yellow and black a chance at knocking off the MFL’s sole unbeaten side.
The Road was held to two goals in the third term while a late Cobram major in the 29th minute handed the Tigers the lead for the quarter, and despite still trailing at the final break - as they had done at every interval - they had closed the gap to seven points.
And then finally, Cobram’s pressure broke the ladder-leaders.
Cobram snared two goals in the opening four minutes of the final quarter, which pushed the Tigers ahead by five for their first lead all game, before the clash entered an arm wrestle for the remainder of the contest.
Every Congupna inside 50 was met with resistance, disallowing The Road a clean hit-up on entry, or a simple shot on goal.
While Cobram’s behinds tallied on, Congupna scored two of their own, but wouldn’t find the middle of the sticks to fall 9.9 (63) to 9.16 (70) at the final siren.

Harry Beasley led the way in the win for the Tigers, closely followed by Tyron Baden, who booted an equal team-high three majors alongside Jack Murray, who was also included in the best, as were Samuel Beasley, Perry Lewis-Smith and Corey Pearse.
The win ensures the Tigers stay fourth on the ladder and massively increases their chances of securing second spot behind Congupna, with the result of Cobram’s mammoth clash against second-placed Mulwala this weekend going a long way to deciding who nabs the runner-up spot.
Across the MFL landscape, Tongala maintained its spot inside the top six with a 10.8 (68) to 5.7 (37) win over Moama, while Nathalia won a low-scoring 10-point nail biter over Numurkah, 7.6 (48) to 5.8 (38).
Rumbalara suffered an 81-point defeat to Finley, 7.6 (48) to 19.15 (129), while Echuca United’s straight kicking produced its fourth win of 2026 against Deniliquin Rams, 12.5 (77) to 7.8 (50).
