Mayor Julia Cornwell-McKean said every year there were people quietly doing wonderful things across the towns and communities.
“People volunteering their time, supporting others, achieving incredible things or simply stepping up when their community needs them,” she said.
“We want our Australia Day Awards to recognise those contributions, and to do that, we need our community to tell us about them.”
Council is encouraging community members to re-nominate deserving people who have been nominated in previous years but were not selected as an award recipient.
Not receiving an award in one year does not mean a nominee’s contribution was not worthy of recognition.
In some years, the difference between nominees can be very small, and each year’s nominations are considered on their own merits.
The annual awards provide an opportunity to celebrate outstanding contributions across the community, with nominations invited across four categories:
• Citizen of the Year — 25 years and older
• Young Citizen of the Year — 24 years and younger
• Sportsperson / Sports Team of the Year
• Community Organisation / Community Event of the Year
Several changes to the nomination process have been made this year, including simplifying the nomination form.

Nominations close on October 31 at 5pm, with award recipients to be recognised at Berrigan Shire’s Australia Day event in Tocumwal on January 26, 2027.
