The election also saw the Liberal Party’s Sussan Ley return to the NSW electorate of Farrer, despite an 8.69 per cent swing in first preference votes against her.
Ley has held the seat since 2001, and was recently confirmed the leader of the Liberal Party.
Here is a breakdown of results from polling booths across the Cobram-Barooga district.
Cobram
A total of 820 formal votes were cast at the Cobram Civic Centre on Saturday, May 3.
Mr Birrell won 36.34 per cent of these, while Labor candidate Kim Travers received 27.07 per cent of the first preference count.
Ms Travers was followed by One Nation candidate Aaron Tyrrell on 15.98 per cent.
The Greens’ Shelby Eade came in with 9.02 per cent of the first preference vote count.
In the two candidate preferred vote, Mr Birrell was the clear winner with 59.76 per cent of the count, ahead of Kim Travers, who took home 40.24 per cent.
It was a similar story at the pre-poll booth at the Apex Reserve, where Mr Birrell gained a swing of 25.90 per cent of first preferences with 53.22 per cent of the count, followed by Kim Travers on 20.99 per cent.
Strathmerton
At the Strathmerton Memorial Hall polling place, a total of 411 formal votes were cast.
Mr Birrell emerged as the clear winner with 48.18 per cent of first preference votes, enjoying a healthy 27.78 per cent swing.
He was followed by Mr Tyrrell on 20.19 per cent of first preferences, and Ms Travers on 17.76 per cent.
Yarroweyah
A total of 297 formal votes were cast at the Yarroweyah Memorial Hall on election day.
Similarly to in Strathmerton, One Nation polled well at the Yarroweyah Memorial Hall polling place, claiming 21.21 per cent of first preference votes.
Again, however, Mr Birrell emerged in the lead, with 50.51 per cent of first preferences.
Katamatite
On election day, 213 formal votes were cast at the Katamatite Primary School.
About 50.7 per cent of first preference votes went to Mr Birrell, while Mr Tyrrell received 19.72 per cent of the count.
Mr Eade outpolled Ms Travers on first preferences, 8.45 per cent to 7.98 per cent.
Paul Bachelor of the Family First Party equalled Ms Travers’ first preference count, with 7.98 per cent.
Barooga
In the electorate of Farrer, the contest boiled down to Ms Ley and independent candidate Michelle Milthorpe.
A total of 498 formal votes were cast at the Barooga Public School on election day.
Of those first preference formal votes, 44.38 per cent went to Ms Ley, with a swing against her of 11.08 per cent.
It was a tight margin of less than a single percentage point between independent Michelle Milthorpe (17.27 per cent) and Labor candidate Glen Hyde (16.87 per cent) on the first preference count.
One Nation candidate Emma Hicks came in next with 8.43 per cent of first preference votes, followed by The Greens’ Richard August Hendrie (3.41 per cent).
Tocumwal
The polling place at the Tocumwal War Memorial Hall saw a total of 967 voters cast their ballot.
Of these, 872 were counted as formal votes.
Despite a swing of 7.87 per cent against her, Ms Ley recorded 50.34 per cent of the vote in first preferences.
Mr Hyde was next with 16.06 per cent, followed by Ms Milthorpe with 12.04 per cent of first preferences.
