The LGA saw total criminal incidents drop from 3762 to 3721, a drop of 1.3 per cent.
However, Seymour has seen a slightly higher drop with criminal incidents down to 968 from 1019 the previous year, a drop of 5.1 per cent.
Within Mitchell Shire, Wallan had the highest number of criminal incidents recorded at 1063. Seymour came in second with 968.
The five principal offence subgroups recorded in the 12 months to March 2026 were:
- breach family violence order — 417 incidents, down from 438 the previous year;
- other thefts — 389 incidents, down from 427 the previous year;
- criminal damage — 359 incidents, down from 373 the previous year;
- steal from motor vehicle — 270 incidents, down from 347 the previous year; and
- drug possession — 163 incidents, up from 109 the previous year.
Compared to other LGAs across Victoria on a per capita basis, in terms of criminal incidents recorded, Mitchell Shire sits 37th out of 79 local government areas, with 5621 incidents per 100,000 population.
While Mitchell Shire’s criminal incidents recorded is about average compared to every LGA in Victoria, it is over-represented in terms of family violence incidents.
Incidents of family violence per capita in Mitchell Shire was 2109.4 incidents per 100,000 population, the 22nd highest of all LGAs in Victoria.
However, family violence rates are trending in the right direction, with total family incidents recorded down by 5.1 per cent.
