However, respite has arrived for those affected in the Moira Shire, who will be able to call on emotional and practical support at a designated coronavirus hotline thanks to Victorian Government funding.
Moira Shire Council received $58,860 to serve as a ‘community connector’, with council's community general manager Sally Rice acknowledging the support to be crucial during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“We welcome the recent announcement from the state government regarding $58,860 funding for Moira Shire,” she said.
“The COVID-19 pandemic has produced and exacerbated conditions that may result in social isolation for members of our communities.
“This funding will help to support activities that assist individuals who are experiencing loneliness or social withdrawal to connect with services and local informal supports.”
Moira Shire’s financial allocation comes as a part of Victorian Government’s Community Activation and Social Isolation initiative, with $6 million to be distributed across the state in the next six months.
A partnership with Australian Red Cross volunteers will expand the initiative, where callers who feel anxious or distressed can ring the hotline and receive advice on how to deal with their situation.
The hotline will also link people in need to community connectors for local practical supports and social activities, such as video chats, online book clubs or fitness groups.
Member for Northern Victoria Mark Gepp placed his support behind the initiative, relaying its importance as a support pillar for those who desperately need it.
“This is a great initiative that will enable our local networks to provide people in our community with practical, emotional and social support if they need it,” he said.
“If you’re feeling lonely, give the coronavirus hotline a call on 1800 675 398 and press three to speak to an Australian Red Cross volunteer who will provide a friendly ear and who can connect you to supports in your local community.”
The coronavirus hotline can be reached at 1800 675 398, while a social support hub for older citizens has been set up at the Victorian Government’s Seniors website at
