Air raid alerts lasted for more than an hour across the capital of three million on Wednesday, where the military administration said seven sites were pummelled in an assault that began after midnight.
Authorities said one person died, 24 were injured and buildings were damaged in several areas of Kyiv.
"There may still be people under the rubble," mayor Vitali Klitschko wrote on Telegram after rescuers pulled two people from the ruins of a warehouse near the city centre that was destroyed in the attack.
"Search and rescue operations are proceeding."
An ambulance driver was among the 24 injured, four of them still in critical condition, he said.
On Wednesday, the Russian defence ministry said it had hit logistics hubs and supply centres in Kyiv and surrounding areas, accusing them of being used for military purposes.
In its morning report, the Ukrainian air force said Russian military fired four Zircon and 24 Iskander-M 400 missiles and 115 drones overnight, with Ukrainian air defences destroying or suppressing 98 drones, but no missiles.
Kyiv has been seeking from the United States more PAC-3s, the newest type of Patriot interceptor missile and one of the few weapons capable of downing Russia's ballistic missiles launched into Ukraine.
The United States is pressing ahead with talks on allowing Ukraine to make Patriot missiles, even after President Donald Trump cast doubt on such a deal, four sources familiar with the discussions said.
Kyiv's Klitschko said the overnight attack set off fires in warehouses and storage areas, but initial reports that a 20-storey apartment building was ablaze proved inaccurate.
A large fire broke out on the city's outskirts, he said, and debris from a fallen missile landed beside a residential building.
The Kyiv military administration said the attack caused an ammonia leak that emergency crews were tackling.
Reuters witnesses heard explosions throughout the city. Klitschko said air defence units scrambled to repel the assault.
The attack was the latest in a series of large-scale Russian ballistic missile strikes that have become near-routine this summer.
Ukraine has a limited stockpile of interceptor missiles for the US-made Patriot systems, the sole air defence system in its arsenal able to shoot down ballistic missiles.
This makes large volleys such as Wednesday's hard to stop, even as Ukraine has stepped up deep strikes on Russian oil refineries and energy infrastructure.
In Russia, Ukraine hit a logistics hub of Russian online retailer Wildberries, adding to more than a dozen it has damaged recently.
Russia and Ukraine deny targeting civilians in the war triggered by Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
