First constructed in 1915, the tower remains an important part of the local water system today, delivering water pressure via gravity to the surrounding community.
According to Coliban Water, a structural assessment report indicated that the tower remained stable and no immediate structural failure had been identified; however, there were signs of deterioration in part of the tower.
“We have obtained external independent engineering advice to inform our approach to managing the tower,” Coliban Water said.
“We are currently working on a series of projects to ensure community safety and the continuity of water supply in Echuca.
“It is likely that the tower may need to be demolished in the coming months.
“This is disappointing, given the history of the tower; however, due to this assessment and the expected ongoing deterioration due to its age, we are prioritising and managing the tower’s potential long-term safety risks.”
