Reverend Father Patrick Bernard McKenna, born Lowood Qld, on the 13th August 1929. Raised in Gympie and educated by the Christian Brothers. Priest of the Diocese of Cairns. Studied at Pius XII Seminary Banyo. Ordained to Priesthood on the 29th June 1956, at St Stephen’s Cathedral, Brisbane. Fr McKenna entered into Eternal Life, at the Cairns Hospital, on Friday Morning 12th June 2026, aged 96 years. Fr McKenna served in the following Parishes, Chaplaincies and Apostolates during his Priestly Ministry. St Monica’s Cathedral 1957-1964, Our Lady Help of Christians Earlville 1965-1983 ‘the beginning of the Earlville Parish’, St Joseph’s Weipa 1983, St Joseph’s Atherton 1983-1995, Good Shepherd Parish Mt Isa 1995-1996, St Monica’s Cathedral 1996-2000, St Joseph’s Parramatta Park 2000-2015, Mother of Good Counsel North Cairns 2009-2010, St Francis Xavier’s West Cairns 2010-2011, Mother of Good Counsel North Cairns 2013-2016, Retired 2016. Chaplain to Mercy Place (Bethlehem) Home and Coral Sea Gardens Westcourt. Chancellor 1959-1964, Chancellor 1996-2011, Apostleship of the Sea-Liaison, Australian Navy Chaplain, Industrial Chaplain NQEA, Hospital Chaplain, Prison Chaplain, Aboriginal and Islander Catholic Council Chaplain.

Most dearly loved son of Patrick and Elizabeth McKenna (both dec’d), loved brother and brother in law of Kevin (dec’d) and Margaret (dec’d) McKenna, Kathleen and Graham (dec’d) Johnston, Veronica and Neil (dec’d) Walker, loved uncle of the McKenna,
Johnston and Walker families.

Fr McKenna’s body will be received at Our Lady Help of Christians Catholic Church, 18 Balaclava Road, Earlville, at a Vigil of Prayers and Memories and a Liturgical Reception of his body on SUNDAY EVENING 28th June 2026, commencing at 5.00pm.

Most Revered Bishop Joseph Caddy AM, Bishop of Cairns, Clergy and Religious of the Diocese of Cairns, all family, relatives, parishioners and many friends of FATHER PATRICK McKENNA are respectfully invited to attend a Solemn Funeral Mass, which will be celebrated on MONDAY MORNING 29th June 2026, commencing at 10.00am at St Monica’s Cathedral, 183 Abbott Street, Cairns City. Following the Mass the interment will take place in the Priest’s Section of the Cairns Martyn Street Monumental Cemetery.
