The Yarrawonga Lawn Tennis Club is set for a busy start to the 2026/27 season, with some of the region’s most experienced tennis players heading to Yarrawonga this Sunday, October 4, for the opening round of the North East Veterans Circuit.
The tournament is open to players aged 30 and over and provides a great opportunity for players from across the region to get back on court, enjoy some competitive tennis and catch up with old friends.
The format is a little different to a traditional tournament. Players enter individually rather than with a nominated partner and are then paired with players of a similar standard. This creates a relaxed but competitive atmosphere, with the emphasis on ensuring everyone gets plenty of tennis.
Every player is guaranteed four sets throughout the day, meaning there is plenty of opportunity to get the legs moving and the competitive juices flowing.
Of course, the tennis is only part of the attraction. Morning tea and lunch are provided, with the event designed to be as much about the social side of tennis as it is about winning and losing. The Seniors Circuit has developed a strong following across the North East and is a great way for players to stay involved in the sport while enjoying the company of other tennis enthusiasts.
Yarrawonga is proud to host the opening round and is looking forward to welcoming players from across the region.
Plenty happening around the club
The Veterans tournament is just the beginning of what promises to be a busy summer at the Yarrawonga Lawn Tennis Club.
The Wilby Tennis Association begins its new season on Friday, October 9, bringing together teams from Burramine, Mulwala, Savernake, Telford, Tungamah and Wilby.
Teams consist of four men and four women, with each player competing in four sets per match. The Association has a long history of providing competitive and social tennis throughout the district and continues to attract players of all ages and abilities.
Anyone interested in joining the competition is encouraged to contact Association President John Wright.
Yarrawonga will also again compete in the Goulburn Murray Lawn Tennis Association’s Saturday afternoon competition. Following a successful return last season, the club will once again play in Division 3, with the competition commencing on Saturday, October 10.
Juniors back on court
The club’s biggest program is also preparing to return, with the Saturday morning junior program commencing on October 10.
More than 200 children have already registered, with the program catering for players from five through to sixteen years of age.
The younger players are introduced to tennis through the Hot Shots program, using smaller courts and age-appropriate activities to develop their skills while keeping the emphasis on fun.
As players progress, the focus shifts towards developing technique and the fundamentals of the game, including serving. Older and more experienced juniors move into match play, with three sets of tennis played each Saturday morning.
With such strong numbers, the club is working hard to make sure every child has the opportunity to participate.
For those wanting to take their tennis a step further, Junior Squad continues on Wednesday afternoons under club coach Grant Kendall.
Grant also conducts group coaching on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday afternoons, while private lessons are available for players looking for more individual attention.
Tennis for everyone
The club continues to offer plenty of opportunities for adults to get involved as well.
Social tennis is available during the week, with ladies playing Tuesday mornings from 9.30 am and men gathering on Wednesday afternoons from 1.00 pm.
The sessions are relaxed and welcoming, making them an ideal way for people to return to tennis or simply enjoy a hit without having to commit to playing every week.
For those looking for something more competitive, the midweek team competitions run from late October through to March. Men play on Tuesday nights and women on Thursday nights, with matches commencing at 6.00 pm.
Players enter individually and are placed into teams to provide even contests. Each player enjoys three sets of doubles, with the social side of the competition remaining an important part of the evening.
membership for the 2026/27 season
Membership is now open, with the club continuing to offer excellent value for players and families.
Junior membership is $100, adult membership is $150 and family membership is $300, covering all members of the household.
Membership includes participation in the Saturday morning junior program, all ball fees, early entry to the club’s Easter Tournament and free use of the courts throughout the year.
With so many different programs and competitions available, membership provides an opportunity to enjoy tennis throughout the summer while supporting the continued operation of the Yarrawonga Lawn Tennis Club.
A club built around community
While there will be plenty of competition over the coming months, the Yarrawonga Lawn Tennis Club remains about much more than simply winning matches.
From five-year-olds hitting their first balls through to Veterans players who have been involved in tennis for decades, the club provides an opportunity for people of all ages and abilities to get involved.
The opening round of the North East Veterans Circuit this Sunday is a perfect example of what the club is all about, with plenty of tennis, plenty of laughs and plenty of good company.
