Round five of the Tigers’ campaign saw them host Mulwala at Scott Oval on Sunday, with the in-form Lions having won three on the trot heading into the weekend’s contest.
It looked as though Cobram was going to feel the full force of that form, too, as the visitors shot out to a big early lead, but the Tigers stayed composed to romp to a 61-point win, the scoreboard reading 20.8 (128) to 11.1 (67) when the final siren sounded.
Possessing a 2-2 record prior to the weekend and looking well off their premiership-winning best at times throughout the opening month of football, there would have been cause for concern among the Cobram huddle at quarter time on Saturday after Mulwala started the contest with a bang, racing out to a 6.0 (36) to 1.1 (7) lead.
But by half time there was less than a kick in it, as Cobram made full use of the scoring end in the second term, to boot 5.1 for the quarter, while restricting the Lions to one straight goal, to head into the rooms trailing 6.2 (38) to 7.0 (42).
With less than a goal separating the two sides, a tight tussle was expected in the second half, but it was the Tigers that kept the momentum to blow the game wide open in the third term.
Booting the first three goals after half time, and five goals to two overall in the third quarter, the home side took the lead for the first time all afternoon, and went into the final break ahead by 15 points, up 11.4 (70) to 9.1 (55).
If Mulwala had any plans of mounting a comeback, though, they were about to be thoroughly disappointed, as the Tigers saved the best for last in a sizzling final term, which should also serve as a reminder to the rest of the league about the scoring power that Cobram possesses.
The Tigers slammed home 9.4 in the fourth quarter to storm to the 10-goal victory, decimating the Lions defence to claim the four points with relative ease.
Perry Lewis-Smith was named Cobram’s best in the victory, continuing his imperious early-season form with a four-goal display, while Ben Ryan wasn’t far behind, booting five himself.
Jackson Trengove (two goals), Bowen Calogero, Tyron Baden (two goals) and Bailey Roberts rounded out the best, while Hugh Hyde and Bodey Webb, the latter in only his second senior game, each kicked three goals to round out the multiple goal kickers.
The win sees Cobram improve to 3-2 for the season and incredibly move into third spot with a percentage of 152.45, despite losing two of its opening three games, as it continues to build nicely into the season.
Round six will see the Tigers head to Moama Recreation Reserve on Saturday to take on the Magpies, who are without a win since round one, in a 2025 semi-final rematch.
