The city has long had a reputation as one of Australia’s capitals when it comes to developing cycling talent, with Brett Lancaster, Stephen Fairless and Shaun O’Brien amongst the names who have represented the region on the global stage previously.
SCC leaders are hoping to spark a new golden era down at their state-of-the-art complex, which underwent significant upgrades including the award-winning multi-use events pavilion revamp in 2025.
The two-storey pavilion features accessible and all-gender amenities, meeting spaces, storage areas, a first aid room, catering facilities, a flexible event space and an outdoor undercover viewing area.
It provides elevated views of the track, enhancing the spectator experience while serving as a central hub for events and community use.
The project also included upgrades to the start hill and already world-class track along with lighting upgrades to the adjacent Shepparton velodrome to help deliver broader benefits for cycling activity in the region.
This major investment in infrastructure proved a shrewd move, with events such as the 2026 GWM BMX Racing National Championships and Round 4 of the AusCycling BMX Racing State Series generating an estimated $6 million for the local economy.
In addition, it has been announced that Shepparton will host the UCI BMX Racing World Cup in 2028 in the lead up to the Olympic Games in Los Angeles that year.
SCC President, Lancaster, who won gold at the Olympics and the Commonwealth Games during his illustrious career on two wheels, is committed to providing pathways for youngsters to compete at the highest level.
Having won gold twice at the UCI Track World Championships in the team pursuit event back in 2002 and 2003, he is perfectly placed to deliver on his objective of developing the world champions of tomorrow.
Now, SCC has issued its mission statement as they aim to provide a launchpad for junior riders, while providing financial support for their emerging prospects to help them compete at in the state, national and international scenes.
“The committee has now introduced the SCC Junior Development Funding Program to help support our junior riders as they progress through State, National and International competition,” a representative from SCC wrote.
“This program provides financial support for eligible SCC juniors competing at higher levels, helping ease the growing costs of travel, accommodation and racing.
“We have some incredibly talented young riders coming through SCC, and we want to support them as they take the next step in their journey—whether that’s State Championships, National Series, or beyond.
“This is about the club investing directly in our juniors and their future.
“We said we want to develop junior talent into world champions. Now we’re backing that ambition.”
