Barooga Bowls Club
Bowlers wanting to play mid-week pennant this season, plus other interested bowlers, listened to a very interesting talk by Bob Adams on Friday.
I am sure bowlers will take in what Adams had to say and this will ensure pennant play will be improved for all.
There will be another discussion in the coming months. Dates are being organised and will be advised when known.
Thanks to Adams for his efforts, it is appreciated by all that attended and certainly by the club.
A lot of bowlers stayed and joined in playing Keith's Friday and we had 40 bowlers who played in enjoyable weather conditions.
Winners were Liz Ewing and Ken Anderson with +21.
Runners-up were decided by ends won as two combinations had a score of +10.
John Canning and Ed Coulstock had 13 ends won, while Doug Pocknee and Des Toohey had 14 ends won and therefore took out the prize.
Best first game winners were Val Toohey and Mike Whelan with +10. Best second game winners were Karen Bruce and Archie Ellis with +14.
On Saturday, we held a club practice match and a good number attended.
We played through to the bell, which allowed us all to come in for a barbecue at the same time.
I think all enjoyed the shoot out as we are all a bit rusty as far as pennant is concerned.
There will be another practice match next Saturday, so names down on the sheet at the club for this to allow the selectors to arrange teams.
I hope all took the opportunity to watch the youtube video "Canadian Bowler Technical Difficulties" as it certainly is a good site to learn.
Keep your eye on this site as other videos will obviously be out on other aspects of the game. I am sure they will help you in some way or another.
The draw for the men's singles has been done with players to play the first round on or before next Sunday.
Draw: Ken Newton plays Ken Quick, Des Toohey plays Mick Crawford, Ray Nye plays Doug Pocknee, Gary Murnane plays Peter Russell, Ray Wright plays Peter Wood, John Bruce plays John Sullivan, Peter Ware plays Ian Smethurst and Brian Baldwin is set to play Ed Coulstock.
Future rounds are as per the white book with the final set down for Monday, November 15, at 9.30 am, where we intend to play the men's and women’s final together.
Club practice officially starts Wednesday at 4 pm, weather permitting. Players are asked to make it 4pm and not before as there may well be specific drills being held and it is therefore necessary for all to arrive at the same time.
Men's 21-up starts on or before Sunday, October 10, with a draw to be done this week with rounds to be completed by the following Sundays.
The final is planned for Sunday, October 31, however this is subject to change.
Women’s 21-up draw will be done after social bowls, so all intending to play must have their names in ASAP.
We still do not have confirmation that pennant will be able to start on October 30, as it needs both state premiers to allow community sport to be played but it does look like that if we start, then it will be for vaccinated people only, so if you haven't yet been vaccinated then it might be a good idea to do so.
Cobram-Barooga Golf Club
Wednesday saw all women able to return to Cobram-Barooga Golf Club for our normal Wednesday competition, with presentation and socialising after the game.
It has been quite a few weeks since we have been able to do this.
The earth shook for this momentous day, excitement was high and the weather and course was perfect.
The third round of the Mary Gemmill trophy was completed from our syllabus, which is a fantastic achievement in another year of COVID-19 lockdowns and restrictions.
Presentation to the winner will be at the annual meeting and presentation day.
We can be thankful that our club is once again open for everyone, we are very lucky as so many are still closed.
Now that we are open again, pro shop staff can offer golf lessons for anyone interested, either starting out in golf, new golfers, junior golfing lessons or anyone interested in just improving their game.
Trainee pro, Steffi Vogel, has been able to continue her traineeship and lots of women have jumped at the chance to take part in her lessons.
From all reports they have thoroughly enjoyed the lessons, and it was a great learning experience for all who have taken part.
If interested, contact pro Michael for more information.
