She will compete in the junior women’s short course event after a successful year in both state and national competitions.
In March, Emma won three gold medals at the Victorian Canoe Marathon Championships in the short course, long course and long course doubles events.
She also won silver in the U18 short course at the Paddle Australia Canoe Marathon Championships, which helped her qualify for the world championships.
“I came second in the under-18 women’s short course … I was 14.9 seconds behind the winner, which got me the qualification,” Emma said.
She said she was shocked when she found out she had made the team.
“When it finally hit me, I cried … then when I got my letter, I cried again because I was like, ‘oh my god, I made it’,” she said.
Emma is headed to the world championships in Argentina this October.

Emma is the only female from Victoria selected in her age group and is one of only a few Australian girls competing in the under-18 category.
She will be competing in the short course, which is 3.6km long and includes three laps and two portages, where athletes must get out of their boat, run with it, and get back in.
Emma said she had been training hard to prepare for the competition.
“It’s been a lot of hard work. I do many beach sprints, the gym and early morning trainings,” she said.
Emma said she was excited but nervous about competing overseas for the first time.
“I’m very nervous and very excited,” she said.
Emma is now fundraising to help cover travel costs and shipping her boat to Argentina.
