Lions bring Moama’s streak to grinding halt

Mulwala would go onto extend its run of consecutive majors to 11 during the second term while continuing to keep Moama goalless.

The visitor finally hit the scoreboard in the period, but with three behinds, trailing 0.3 (3) to 11.7 (73) at half-time.

The host continued its barrage to open the second half, with the run of goals reaching 15 — Mulwala at one stage leading 101-4 — before Moama found its first major just before three-quarter time.

Shannon Keam’s side improved in the fourth term — which it still lost 29-18 — but its fate had long been sealed, Mulwala posting a big 19.18 (132) to 4.4 (28) win.

The 104-point defeat is not only a major blow to Moama’s percentage, which now sits in the 80s, but also saw the Magpies slip outside the finals spots.

Moama (7-5) is seventh, below fifth-placed Tongala and sixth-placed Numurkah via percentage, with Tonny having won an all-Blues encounter in other action on Saturday.

The Magpies still have a game in hand on both Blues outfits, though their next test won’t get any easier, facing undefeated league leader Congupna away from home.
