Selected in the Giants’ 23-man squad to head up to the Gold Coast following a solid performance in the opening game of the football championships, which saw his side claim a 21-point victory over rivals Sydney Swans, Thompson lined up against Tasmania on Monday morning at People First Stadium, home of the Gold Coast Suns, and took things to another level.
Lining up on the wing again, the junior Tiger was named among the best players and booted three goals off the wing, as the GWS Academy notched a dominant 13.9 (87) to 6.8 (44) victory over Tasmania.
Given feedback to use his speed by coaches after the first game of the championships, Thompson did just that against Tasmania, showcasing a blistering turn of foot to steal the ball and storm inside 50 for his first major in the first quarter, while pouncing on any loose balls and powering away from opponents when presented the opportunity.
Another two goals in the second half capped a brilliant performance, with the classy outside player making the most of his nine disposals to be among the most impactful players on the ground.
Thompson’s brilliant showing was a strong factor in the victory, which now sees the Giants move to a perfect 2-0 record, and sets up a massive clash with the Gold Coast Suns Academy on Thursday in the third and final game of the championships for both sides, with the Suns also earning two wins from the opening two games.
Eamon Hyde, Thompson’s fellow Cobram teammate, is in action this week on the Gold Coast as well representing Victoria Country, with the Big V’s Country side coming off a first-up win over their Metro counterparts, in which Hyde was named in his side’s best in the 15.13 (103) to 8.7 (55) victory.
Hyde and Vic Country faced off against South Australia on Tuesday morning at People First Stadium, though the result was unavailable at time of print. They are set to face Western Australia in the final game of the championships this Friday.
