Cobram’s terrific first season in the Goulburn Murray Women and Girls league came to an end at the weekend, with both the youth girls and senior women’s sides falling in their respective semi-final clashes.

In a bumper day of action at Deakin Reserve in Shepparton on Sunday, which saw four semi-finals played, it was the youth girls side that took to the field first against minor premier Moama, and despite putting together a valiant effort in wet and wild conditions, the Tigers went down 1.2 (8) to 8.5 (53).
The Magpies, who have proved a force in the competition in recent years, proved too strong in the contest, though Tiger Indy Bear provided a bright spark in the final term with Cobram’s only goal. She was named among the best, as was Mereani Lecanadau, named Cobram’s most influential, while Payton Van Every, captain Charlotte Cherry and Kaylah Smith were among the better performers in defeat.
In the senior women’s contest, the Tigers faced a tough task against reigning premier Shepparton United, with the Demons going undefeated throughout the home and away season.
Although they were held scoreless in torrid conditions to half time, Cobram proved up for the fight, scrapping to restrict United to just 3.2 to remain in the hunt ahead of a huge second half.

Unfortunately, they were unable to match the might of the Demons, but did muster a final term goal to eventually go down 1.1 (7) to 6.5 (41).
Despite the losses, having both sides clinch finals berths in the club’s first season in the league is a testament to the strength of Cobram as a club, and no doubt both sides will take to the field with renewed confidence and strength in 2027.
The 2026 Goulburn Murray Women and Girls grand finals will be played this Sunday, August 16 at Moama Recreation Reserve, with Moama and Shepparton United to contest the youth girls decider, while Shepparton United and Mansfield will go toe-to-toe in the senior women’s grand final.
