Cobram-Barooga branch program co-ordinator Kay Morgan said this was the club's 11th year doing the walk against domestic violence.
“It’s through the United Nations and its 16 days of activism from the 25th of November to the 10th of December,” she said.
“It's more prevalent than you realise, and we just want to highlight that fact, the more you get it out there, the more people realise it's just not on.
“And there's more and more stuff in the media now about domestic violence, and men are starting to recognise that it's not okay and guys should be calling out their mates if they're being derogatory or coercive to women.
“So I think by us having this walk, we get a little bit of media attention, which is great, and it just helps to highlight that.”
The branch makes a donation to VincentCare’s Marian Community every year and this year it has donated $1000.
VincentCare’s Marian Community is a 24/7 family violence crisis service helping victim-survivors at risk of or experiencing family violence across the Goulburn region of Victoria.
“Marion Community looks after people that are fleeing domestic violence, so women can go there, they’ll be given accommodation, they’ll be given a gift pack of things that they might need, like sanitary items, toiletries, clothing...” Ms Morgan said.
Cobram-Barooga branch president Karen Bruce has been a member of the club since it began 33 years ago and believes raising awareness of domestic violence is incredibly important.
“I think it’s just acknowledging the fact that the violence is out there, and it’s got to be stopped,” Ms Bruce said.
“We give that donation every year without any hesitation because we know it’s going to a good cause and that’s what we’re working towards, helping women and girls.”
