Alongside the other 14 applicants, Mr Urquhart was chosen from a field of nearly 1000 applicants after undertaking physical, practical and behaviour-based assessments.
Each will be employed to train and work across regional and rural Victoria as line workers, meter technicians, cable jointers or fitters.
Originally living in Yarrawonga, Mr Urquhart worked as a domestic electrician for the past six years where he completed his four-year apprenticeship in that time.
Now he’ll be trading over his sparky job to become an apprentice line worker in Cobram.
“I was lucky enough to get the job and I’m super excited to get started and learn a whole new skill set and I’m just looking forward to the next step,” Mr Urquhart said.
CitiPower and Powercor’s head of field services Ross Young is excited to have the new recruits on board and hopes they will be a part of a cleaner future in electricity.
“Our apprentices will all play a critical role in delivering for our customers, whether it’s responding to power outages during extreme weather events or upgrading the network to support our customers connect solar or batteries,” he said.
“They are joining our business at a really interesting time as our services and infrastructure expand to enable the two-way flow of power while still delivering safe and reliable electricity.”
Mr Urquhart is hoping his work with Powercor and CitiPower will propel him into further advancements in his career.
“I’m sure there will still be a job for me at Cobram as I hope to stay there and further my career,” he said.
He also encourages more people to get involved in the electricity industry and to not be afraid to try something different.
“Go for it, have a look and ask questions and if you don’t ask questions about the role or dig a little deeper, you’ll never know and it’s a great industry to be in,” he said.
“The pro is there’s job security in the electricity business, because people are always going to need power,” he said.
