The council will seek funding to upgrade existing children’s crossings to raised pedestrian crossings at William St (Cobram Primary School), Gilmore St (Yarrawonga College P-12) and Woods Rd (Sacred Heart College).
The council will apply to the road safety program for the school safety improvement package to fund the upgrades to the crossings.
This has been endorsed by the Victorian Department of Transport and Planning through an expression-of-interest process including site-based risk assessments.
Council chair administrator Graeme Emonson thanked the department for supporting the three crossings for these important works.
“It’s been a rigorous process to get to this point, with 11 priority sites originally presented to the department for consideration, of which seven sites proceeded into the second phase for project investigation,” Dr Emonson said.
“Now these three sites have been chosen to go to the third phase for project development.
“Council is committed to supporting infrastructure projects like this that are essential to the ongoing safety of our community.”
Dr Emonson said council had already engaged with the schools whose communities were serviced by the three crossings.
“Cobram Primary School, Yarrawonga College P-12 and Sacred Heart College Yarrawonga have all provided letters of support for the proposals,” he said.
The new crossings, sometimes called ‘wombat’ crossings or raised priority crossings, will be at the same level as the footpath.
These crossings improve pedestrian safety by making them more visible to drivers, who are required to slow down, and by providing a flat, continuous path for people with mobility issues.
