Following a pilot program at the Numurkah, Tatura and Echuca libraries, GV Libraries has decided to launch the Open Libraries initiative at six further branches, including Cobram and Nathalia.
The initiative extends opening hours and access.
Cobram Library co-ordinator Jess Anderson welcomed the move, explaining it will benefit the library’s members - including those who usually can’t access its free resources because of work or other commitments during existing opening hours.
“We want more people at the library - more people to use these books,” she said.
“That’s what we want - we want more people using the library, accessing all these free resources.”
Services available during the extended access hours will include borrowing, Wi-Fi, public PCs, study spaces, print, scan and copy services.
CEO of Goulburn Valley Libraries Felicity Macchion said the initiative is a fantastic addition to these library branches and the wider Goulburn Valley community.
“It will extend our libraries’ operating hours and offer a welcoming space for even more community members to enjoy,” she said.
Library members will need to complete a mandatory safety induction session, after which they will be able to avail themselves of the library’s services from 8am to 8pm, seven days a week, including public holidays.
There will be no changes to staffed hours.
The membership upgrade is available only to members aged 18 and over and is subject to additional terms and conditions.
Customers under-18 may access the service with a guardian.
The Open Library project will be launched on Thursday, June 5 by the Victorian Minister for Local Government Nick Staikos.
The launch will be held at the Cobram Library at 11am.
