Victoria Police officers to strike over pay dispute

Thousands of police and protective service officers will go on strike after protracted negotiations over pay and conditions with Victoria Police broke down.

The union and the police force were locked in a months-long negotiation over a new enterprise agreement with demands for four per cent pay rises and better working conditions, such as nine hour shifts central to their demands.

Officers across Victoria will take action from 7am on Sunday which will lead to 19 simultaneous bans across the force after the demands could not be met.

Police Association secretary Wayne Gatt said actions taken will include setting off speed cameras, slowing drivers down in those locations and handing out information to the public in public places.

A public campaign with messages of their concerns scrawled on police cars, boats, trucks and helicopters parked in the vicinity of government premises is on the agenda.

Government officials will also stop receiving briefings and reports under the action.

"Our members, armed with crayons in hand, will take to their vehicles on Sunday morning at seven o'clock, and they'll tell the government exactly what they think of it," Mr Gatt said.
