A man has been taken to hospital after an incident near Darwin which involved a police officer firing a shot.
Details of the man's condition have not been revealed, but police say officers at the scene were not injured.
They had gone to a location in Palmerston about 9am on Tuesday and were allegedly confronted by the man.
"During the incident, an officer discharged their firearm," Northern Territory police said in a statement.
"There is no further risk to the public from this incident."
A critical incident has been declared, with NT Assistant Commissioner Michael White leading an investigation.
Police said the welfare of the officers involved and the broader workforce was paramount and the Northern Territory Police Association had been advised.
