Cobram Agricultural Show Society president Karen Creighton said in a recent Facebook post the decision was not made lightly.
“The health and safety of everyone involved including members, volunteers, community patrons, traders, exhibitors and competitors are our number one priority, and this was our main discussion when making this decision,” she said.
“During this time, we also felt we could not ask our sponsors for sponsorship when they themselves are going through a difficult time.
“We would like to thank them for their continuing support over the years and would love to see them back next year.”
Cobram Yarroweyah United Cricket Club president Brett Andrew said the club had been broken into and robbed for the past five years and the money from the show helped to recoup the costs of broken fridge doors and stolen alcohol.
“Usually we lose about $1000 to $2000 a year through breaking and entering — and that’s conservative,” he said.
“Usually we run the barbecue; we don’t make a lot of money, but we make enough to to get our cash flow going.
“We also do the Tocumwal races every year around Easter, but that’s closed too.”
Mr Andrew said the club was already dealing with debt from the previous year with no bar sales during the pandemic and limited funds from its struggling sponsors.
“With these events cancelled our survival is pretty thin.
“The show society have been fantastic, they’ve allowed us to continue doing our little bit there.
“A massive thank you to their support.”
Mrs Creighton thanked the committee members for their hard work leading up to the decision, the community, sponsors, competitors and exhibitors for their ongoing support as well as the volunteers who helped every year.
“Even though we will not be holding a show we are currently looking into running some competitions online so please watch our Facebook page for details,” she said.
“We hope you all understand this difficult decision and once again thank you for your ongoing support.”
