Strathmerton Badminton Club staged the conclusion to its winter, open competition at Cobram’s sport stadium on August 29.

Five teams and a total of 25 competitors took part in the singles and doubles events throughout the season, culminating in the team finals on Friday.
Team Wallabies, consisting of Carlo Ditchon, Shadan Alsabti, Madison Knight, Mevin Abhilash and Rachael Payne, was victorious in the grand final, beating the Opals, six sets to three.
The Opals, comprising Shem Swoffer, Meg Wilkin, Roshan Kidangan, Tom Lewis and Sarah Perkins, put up a great fight, with most of the game scores close.
Ditchon, Knight and Abhilash for the Wallabies were three-set winners, with Kidangan a three-set winner for the Opals.
The competition was followed by the club’s annual awards, with special guest Daryl Williams presenting the Strathmerton Lions Club-sponsored Dawn Williams Quiet Achievers Award to Sarah Perkins.

The Rhonda Cator Most Improved Player award was taken out by first-year player Melvin Abhilash and the best-and-fairest players’ awards, for male and female, were won by Abhilash’s brother, Mevin Abhilash, and Amy Payne, respectively.
Strathmerton Badminton enjoyed another successful winter and looks forward to next year and being back on home ground after the re-stumping of Strathmerton Public Hall is completed.
