A younger and fresher-looking Strathy side took to the field in great conditions on Saturday. It saw a tight contest between two committed sides in the first half.
Some wayward kicking in front of goal didn’t get us the reward for effort we would have liked, but the boys kept at it which would have been pleasing for our supporters to see.
A much better third quarter with seven goals to two blew the game open with our midfield, led by Matt Ryan and Jake Ellery, really getting on top. In the end it was pleasing to come away with a 29-point victory to get our season under way.
Best players: M. Ryan, J. Ellery, S.Emmett, J. Payne, S. Lewis and T. Thomas
Reserves: Strathmerton 7.8 (50) d Jerilderie 4.7 (31)
Strathy led at every break to claim a 19-point win to start the season.
Thirds: No game
Fourths: Strathmerton 5.3 (33) lt Jerilderie 6.2 (38)
The young fourths started the day off pretty well with Ashtyn Speechly kicking four first-quarter goals. However, the opposition kept grinding away into our lead and eventually hit the front with not long to go.
Despite some valiant efforts to get the lead back into a strong breeze we ultimately came up five points short. With such a young side the group will only improve from here.

Netball
A-grade: Strathmerton 50 d Jerilderie 32
With a very new team this year the girls worked at getting to know their new combinations.
Our midcourt was directed and driven by experienced player Kate Betson while our defence worked hard with Meg Denson delivering plenty of turnovers.
Our shooters saw one of our juniors Cait Brooks step up and shoot for the first time in A-grade. It was good to get the win in round one and we look forward to the season ahead.
Awards: Riverbank $100 cash - Kate Betson. Strathy Railway Hotel - Meg Denson. Mars Bar award - Jemmah Ryan
B-grade: Strathmerton d Jerilderie 80-24
With some new combinations and limited time all together at training we headed into Saturday’s game not really knowing what to expect, but we certainly didn’t expect a 56-goal win.
Aside from a couple of brain fades, especially in the second quarter, it was a very exciting game to be a part of, with some great passages of play on display and lots of laughs had out on court. What a bloody fun group to be a part of!
With some experienced bodies running around for us this year, we look forward to a rest over Easter and prepping ourselves for a tough battle against our old rivals Katunga after the break.
Awards: Future Fitness 24/7 $50 cash - Loreena Keane. Railway Hotel - Caitlin Mills
C-grade: Strathmerton 38 d Jerilderie 26
It was a great win to start the season off. Windy conditions saw the girls be more careful with the ball. It was a team effort throughout; defenders were able to take impressive intercepts and goalers were able to reward them with goals.
Awards: Strathmerton Railway - Laura Stewards. Mailbox Cafe - Elsie Hooper
C–reserve: no game
Under-17s: Strathmerton 38 d Jerilderie 36
The girls started a little slow in the first quarter to be down at quarter-time. With plenty of pressure from Dakota Kelly, Amy Wyatt and Eva Laidlaw the girls found their groove. Maddie Shannon and Cait Brooks’ movement in goals and the consistent run of Taylar Knight, Ash Dyson and Alina Corso through the midcourt saw the girls come away with a two-goal win to start the season.
Awards: Crestani Concreting cash - Ash Dyson. Wingates Intersport - Maddie Shannon. Canteen - Taylar Knight.
Under-15s: Strathmerton 14 lt Jerilderie 28
The 15s started off very nervous and took the first quarter to settle into the game. In patches of the game we found good space and used our voices to encourage each other.
Brylie Barnes (Wingates Intersport) and Giselle Wren (SportsFirst Numurkah) were strong in defence and Maddie Knight (Strathy Canteen) played well in goals.
While we went down 14-28 there are lots of positives to take into training and things we can fix quickly.
Under-13s: Strathmerton 14 d Jerilderie 9
An excellent start to season 2023 by our 13s! We started slowly but gained momentum with every quarter to take the win, 14-9. Our defensive pressure was excellent with arms up and over the ball all the way down the court.
We also produced some great passages of attacking play resulting in some classy ring-work and impressive goals. Some work on leading and re-leading as well as our decision making is in order, but overall a really great first game where every single player stepped up at various times. So proud of all the girls.
Alyssah Wilson earned herself the $10 Wingate sports award for a brilliant game in goal defence, Sophie Hughes received the Lefty Baker doughnut voucher for her excellent moving in goal shooting and goal attacking positions and Jess Laidlaw took home the canteen voucher for her shooting accuracy.

Congratulations to Mackenzie, Lily, Madi, Phoebe, Natalie, Sophie and Lizzie on their very first game of U11s netball with the Strathy Bulldogs. You all put into practice what we have been learning at training and made your coaches very proud.
Our second under-11s team played together last year and it showed on the court with strong passes, leading into space and great movement in the goal ring.
Well done!
Awards: Canteen - Lily. $10 Wingates Intersport - Makenna. $5 - Phoebe. $5 - Emma.
