Valley View Golf Club
Women
A small field played in the stableford event at Valley View in very windy weather last week.
Robyn Curnow was surprised to be announced the winner with 31 points and Margaret Smerdon was equally surprised to be runner-up with 29 points.
Six Valley View players competed in the Alpine Classic held over three rounds at Myrtleford, Wangaratta and Bright.
On day one at Myrtleford, Helen Emery was the A-grade winner and Janice Jonstone won B-grade.
On day two in Wangaratta, Helen Emery was runner-up in A-grade.
On day three in Bright, it was Leanne Busch's turn to shine as she was the winner in A-grade.
Congratulations to Emery, who finished third overall in A-grade.
Men
A good field turned out on a perfect day for Saturday’s opening day and the traditional opening day mixed Pinehurst medley.
Ash and Erica Kuiper teamed up for the first time in this event and did so successfully going home as the winners with a round of 96 nett 72.
They finished less than a shot ahead of runners-up Peter Mangan and Judy Greer, who had a very good round of 87 off the stick for a nett score of 72 6/8.
Gordon Mackay and Wendy Cox also had a good score of 91 nett 74 1/8, and they lead the ball competition winners which also featured Peter Blackmore and Von Morris (nett 75 1/4), Paul Kuiper and Wanda Hacon (76 3/8), Mick Coyne and Nat McAuliffe (76 7/8) and Gavon and Helen Armstrong (77 5/8).

On Tuesday, Graeme Harrison continued to chip away at his handicap posting a score of 39 points and recording a one-shot win in A-grade from Rich River’s Richard Caiolfa with 38 points.
The B-grade field could not match that level of scoring with Jeff Carnie the winner with 35 points from Geoff Strachan with 33 points in a three-way countback from Gavon Armstrong and Neville Vicary.
Interestingly, both winners won the nearest the pin balls on the third, while balls in the ball competition went to David Collins with 37 points, Kevin Humbert (36), Gavon Armstrong (33) and Neville Vicary (33).
Kevin Humbert also took home the voucher on the 15th.
This week’s event will be a stableford event and golfers should note that we have now reverted to the single assembly time of 11.30am.
Except for selected events golfers may arrange their own groups to play earlier but (where possible) should notify the captain or duty team in advance.

Perfect weather again at Nagambie for the e88 veteran golfers who made the journey on March 25 for the Goulburn Valley Veteran Golfers Association competition.
The catering by the Nagambie women was also unsurpassed with sumptuous barbecue meat accompanied by a large boiled potato and a selection of salads, finishing with slices of watermelon.
Special thanks are extended to our wounded warriors, Graham Scott and Pooch McHale, who travelled and assisted in registrations although they were unable to play through injury.
This highlights the fact that our committee is four short of our preferred number and we would welcome any inquiry from members interested in securing the association’s future.
The main prizes were well distributed among the represented clubs with A-grade headed by Numurkah’s Jack Dell with 38 stableford points ahead Mooroopna’s Rolf Weber on 37 points.
Parkland’s Dennis Andrews topped B-grade with 40 points, ahead of Rich River’s John King on 39.

Merrigum Golf Club
The first round of the “Tree-Ball Challenge”, a pairs cross-country Ambrose was played at Merrigum on a perfect autumn Saturday.
The event is called a challenge for good reason, with some sneaky short holes obstructed by trees at both the tee-offs, as well as the greens, and some longer holes that provide their own challenges.
The closeness of the scores on Saturday means that for the most part all teams are still in the hunt for the overall honours, as the scores from the two rounds will be added together.
Andrew Wood and Phil Barca combined well to win the first round with a score of 71-10.3-60.7.
They were in fine form, but Happy in particular was striking the ball well.
If they can repeat that performance in the second round, they will be a difficult pairing to overcome.
The runners-up were Craig and Michael Doherty with a score of 75-13-62, so they only have a couple of shots to make up when it comes to the next round.
Ball competition winners were Geoff Kirk and Jeff Newham with 74-11-63 on a countback from Bruce Brown and Tommy Ladhams who had 72-9-63.
Nearest the pins were won by Ash Sanders going to the third green, Andrew Wood on the fourth green and Bill Johnson on the jackpot holes, the ninth and the 18th, the ninth being in lieu of the chook shed challenge.
Last Thursday’s twilight competition was won by visitor Terry Gregory with a round of 53-16-37.
Terry played a few rounds during the formal twilight competition without making the top half of the field, however, with the pressure off he came into his own this week.
The runner-up was Bill Bray with 42-3-39.
Simon Doherty took the jackpot for nearest the pin on the ninth, as well as winning least putts with 16 on a countback from Bill Bray.
This Thursday will likely be the final round of twilight for this season.
This Saturday’s event is stroke for the Privilege Cup and is also the Tiger Cup play-off for the winners of the Privilege Cup over the past 12 months.
Those who have qualified are Noel Shields, Ash Sanders, John Fuller, Clint Prygoda, Bill Bray, Andy Baxter and Bill Johnson.
There were several multiple winners, hence only the seven qualifiers.
Good luck to all those in the play-off.
