Who would have predicted that after seven matches between them both of last year’s AFL grand finalists have accumulated one win in total?
As with footy, the glorious uncertainties of sport and the vagaries of good form are on constant display at ClubMulwala Snooker Club, with only a select few being able to play consistently well over a lengthy period.
Our handicapping system exists to provide a level playing field and thus spread the joy of victory relatively evenly by helping and challenging us all at various times.
This is one of the many excellent reasons for new players to try out snooker through joining the club. No matter what standard you may play at, you will always be welcome and competitive at our club.
The Bruce Bond Trophy event is dedicated to the memory of a long serving club secretary, committee member and player who contributed a great deal to our club. It is highly sought after by all members with a player’s name on the trophy being an achievement that all winners are very proud of.
Qualifying rounds for this year’s event were held on March 18 and 19 with the final being contested on Monday, March 25. Darren Edwards maintained his stellar 2024 form to be the first player to make the final – and attain a career record new handicap – in the first round and Nev Page falling over the line in a couple of black ball results in the second stanza.
The final, which was contested over a best of three frame format, saw Nev hitting the front via the black ball in frame one. Predictably, Darren then fought back in the second to level the scores and set up a winner-take-all decider.
After a closely fought contest, the match was decided on what is known in snooker circles as a ‘fluke’ when Nev missed a potential match winning pink ball and unintentionally left the cue ball perfectly behind the black ball, leaving Darren in an impossible snooker.
Whilst it was a pity to see such a close match decided in this manner, both Darren and Nev are to be congratulated on their performances in reaching the final.
As proof of Darren’s excellent form this year he defeated Nev in the final of our social play event on Wednesday, March 20. Nev, on the other hand, completed the third ClubMulwala Snooker Club weekly double for the year by taking out our social event on March 27 with a hard-fought victory over our youngest player in Luca Macheda. Luca is one of our rising stars and will no doubt get plenty of revenge over Nev in the future.
As can be seen on the ClubMulwala website, its members newsletter and our ClubMulwala Snooker Club facebook page we welcome new members or anyone who may like to give snooker a try.
ClubMulwala sponsors our club very generously so our value for money ratio for players is very high indeed.
There are a variety of events held every Monday and Wednesday evening and there are plenty of opportunities for new players to join or come along to try our facilities out. We have two excellently maintained full size tables, which have recently been re-surfaced and a new state of the art lighting system.
Our snooker room is available for competition, practice and visitor use, and the club has its own regularly updated handicapping system to ensure players from beginners to advanced level can compete equally.
There are also plenty of experienced and skilled players (including the current Oceania Masters champion) who can help with advice and tips on how to improve your game or perhaps adapt it for those who have played pub or social pool in the past.
Please contact us on either 0497 062 443 or 0418 361 779 or visit us on a Wednesday evening before 7pm if you would like to give snooker a try.
