Travelling to Scott Reserve, the Blues produced a composed four-quarter performance to defeat Cobram 49 to 33, overcoming a competitive opening to take control as the match wore on.
While the margin may not have been the largest of the round, it was the manner in which Numurkah battled on that caught the eye.
The Tigers more than matched Numurkah through the opening exchanges, with Brianna Armitage and Aimee Sidebottom combining effectively early on in proceedings.
However, the Blues began to assert control during a war of attrition down at Scott Reserve and it was their efficiency in front of goal that proved the difference.
Kendal Judd was outstanding throughout, finishing with 34 goals in a flawless display of accuracy.
Supported by Abby Commadeur (eight) and Emily Buzza (seven), Numurkah’s attacking end made the most of its opportunities, converting consistently whenever chances arose.
That reliability contrasted with the pressure being applied further up the court, where the eventual victors’ defensive unit gradually began to disrupt the Tigers’ flow.
Despite that, Cobram refused to say die as Armitage (15) and Sidebottom (18) both shot at 100 per cent, a testament to their composure once the ball reached the circle.
However, Numurkah’s ability to generate more opportunities, particularly through the middle third, allowed it to build and maintain its lead.
The decisive period came after half-time, when the Blues began to turn steady control into scoreboard separation.
A run of unanswered goals stretched the margin, and from that point, Cobram was left chasing the game en route to an opening day defeat.
At the other end of the scale, Congupna endured a difficult start to its campaign, falling to a dominant Mulwala outfit by some 56 goals.
The 71 to 15 result reflected a challenging day, with Mulwala controlling possession and limiting Congupna’s opportunities to generate any sustained attacking momentum.
Elsewhere, Nathalia made an early statement with a commanding 67 to 47 win over Tongala, showcasing composure and attacking efficiency to pull away as the game progressed.
Moama also opened its account positively, defeating Echuca United 45 to 33, while Deniliquin Rams proved too strong for Finley with a 55 to 26 victory.
