Battling it out at Merrigum Recreation Reserve, it would’ve been nice for the Dogs to finally get on the board, with the side not able to tally a victory with just three rounds remaining in the 2025 home-and-away season.
Things looked good for Merrigum in the opening stanza, with the Bulldogs’ sheer number of chances giving them a slim four-point lead after both sides kicked a goal each.
However, Merrigum was limited to just one minor score in the second period as Girgarre went nuclear in front of goal, nailing 5.4 to give itself a 29-point advantage at the major break.
While the Bulldogs managed to have their most successful passage of play in the third term, slotting two goals, it wasn’t enough to dent Girgarre’s (6.3) attacking barrage, with the lead ballooning out to 55 with a quarter to go.
Ending its day with a goal and behind, Merrigum couldn’t go close to making it a competitive game as the Roos ran away to a 16.11 (107) to 4.8 (32) victory.
Billy Barnes (4) was potent in front of goal as usual, with Billie Gahan and Steven Phillips getting in on the action with three majors apiece.
Girgarre will be in for two tough contests to finish off its season, playing league-leaders Murchison-Toolamba, and likely finalist Rushworth, before a bye in the final round of the season.
