PDFL | Strathmerton, Katamatite shine in round one of Picola and District League season
The Picola and District League returned to action at the weekend, with Strathmerton and Katamatite kicking off the new football season with victories.
The Bulldogs defeated Jerilderie by 29 points on Saturday, while the Tigers had a hard-fought 17-point triumph over a resilient Mathoura.
Tim Looby was the main man up forward for Strathmerton, booting a game-high six majors that helped his team to a 13.12 (90) to 9.7 (61) triumph over the Demons.
The third quarter proved vital for the Dogs as they piled on seven goals to Jerilderie’s two, opening up a vital advantage that proved to be the difference between the two sides.
Katamatite held off a strong finishing Timbercutters outfit to prevail 11.10 (76) to 9.5 (59).
Mathoura won just one game last season, but the Cutters showed plenty of fight as they took the challenge right up to a Tigers team that made finals in 2022.
But Katamatite was ultimately just too strong. The Tigers led at every change, and despite being held to just one goal in the final term, came away with the four points.
Yarroweyah's senior side took on Picola United on Saturday, falling to the Blues by 135 points.
It was a goal-fest to start the season for United, with both Cody Haub and Taylor Beard feasting in the forward line.
Haub was on fire as he kicked 9.1 on the day, with Beard also booting a bag of seven goals.
While it was a hefty defeat for the Hoppers, it was still a step in the right direction for the club.
Yarroweyah played just one game of senior football last season, with the club equalling that mark straight off the bat as it looks build and field a side throughout the new campaign.
In other results, Rennie was the biggest winner of the opening round after trouncing Blighty 26.20 (176) to 5.3 (33). Chase Strawhorn kicked a remarkable 13 goals for the Hoppers.
Katandra defeated Berrigan 15.19 (109) to 5.1 (31), Tungamah was too good for Katunga, 18.14 (122) to 10.6 (66), and Waaia prevailed over Deni Rovers 21.15 (141) to 12.11 (83).
