Emma, 17, was first in three under-18 classes at the state championships — the women's short course marathon, the women's long course and the mixed class.
“When I came first at state and school championships, I was really happy and excited,” she said.
The under-18 women's short course marathon championships were held on Friday, March 20 and consisted of three short laps and two portages.
“A portage is when we have to jump out of our boats, pick them up and run, then get back in and continue the race,” Emma said.
“The portage was 190m with pontoons at each end and the race was 3km long.”
Two of Emma's races involved a portage, where she had to jump out of her boat, pick it up and run.

The under-18 women's long course marathon championships were held on Saturday, March 21 and consisted of four long laps and one short lap with two portages.
“A long lap was 4km, and the short lap was 1km, and the portage was still 190m,” Emma said.
“The entire race ended up being 17km long in total.
“I also came first in the under-18 mixed K2 with a boy from my club named Hunter Iskov, we raced a 9km race with two long laps and one short lap.”
Emma said she began training for the states' event in May last year.
“My training involved a lot of other races, sprint training to practice starts, 12km time trials, and portages on the beach,” she said.
Emma has been kayaking for eight years and said she got into the sport through her mum.
“My mum did it during high school and when she found a canoe club she got involved, I liked watching her paddle and I started,” Emma said.
“What I love most about kayaking is all the adventures and trips I get to go on.
“I have travelled the majority of the country for this sport, and I have travelled all over Victoria to compete.
“I also love all the friends I have made along the way.”
Emma’s quest is to qualify for the ‘Worlds’ in Argentina in October and if she does, she will be doing one of her Year 12 VCE exams over in Argentina.
“I love training and kayaking,” she said.
“I want to go to the Worlds this year in Argentina and represent my country.”
