On Saturday and Sunday, March 28 and 29, the Victorian state association croquet team was in Ky, getting in some practice for the Eire cup, the annual interstate association croquet teams tournament.
“They were going around to different clubs, on weekends, practising on different courts because no two courts are the same,” club secretary Thelma O’Keefe said.
Local members got a chance to see the state’s top talents in action, including two of their own, Claire Bassett and Kerri-Ann Organ, who both feature in the 10-person squad, with Bassett captaining the side.
The team will compete in Western Australia between April 14 and 19.
Association croquet is the historically traditional, but more complex variant of croquet, with golf croquet preferred for beginners and played by the vast majority of Kyabram members.
With Bassett and Organ in the fold, it is hoped the association croquet presence can again grow within the club, with the association competition in recess since 2018.

On the subject of golf croquet, two Kyabram talents have been battling the region’s best.
Ky held its club championships in early March, and Bernie Noonan in division two, and Shane Russell in division three, emerged from the competition, qualifying for the Goulburn Valley Croquet Association Champion of Champions in Shepparton.
Noonan finished a credible fourth in his division, but Russell blew through the competition, and is now headed on to the regional level at Cairnlea.
He will take on the state’s best in his division from April 10 to 12.
Bernie Noonan was one of Kyabram’s club champions, representing the club in division two in Shepparton.
