This would free up Sunday for the semi finals of the A-grade men’s championship.
On Saturday, bowling members and partners gathered at the Diggers’ RSL Bowls Clubrooms.
They sat down to a scrumptious lunch of ham, turkey, prawns and salads - and all the other trimmings - and celebrated the survival of their club, the resilience of their loyal members, the presentation of last season's championships.
The 2024-25 club presentations had not been awarded due to an executive committee upheaval earlier in the year, and the threat of the club folding.
The new formed committee was formed in time for the club to continue to compete in the Campaspe Playing Area Weekend and Midweek pennant seasons.
Plans were also put in place for a celebration of last season’s accomplishments.
Results were as follows:
Men's A-grade Singles Champion - Miro Peterman; runner--up Craig Taylor.
Pairs Champions - Miro Peterman and Rod Reid.
The trophies were accepted with great pride and spurred on a determination for all Club Championships to be played this season.
Adding to these honours, Jake Glenn, Danny Stanmore, Craig Taylor and Niels Hilton were presented with their ‘8’ badges.
This award is given for achieving a “perfect score” of eight shots in a pennant game.
The club also took the opportunity to officially welcome its newest junior member - Mason Glenn.
The younger brother of Jake, he is eager to begin pennant in 2026 for the Diggers, and all members are excited to have him on board.
The festive celebrations continued into the early evening with music, a lively club spirit and a late game of Trivial Pursuit.
2025-26 Club Singles
Sunday was another day on the greens, and an early working bee to repair cocky damage, to allow the Men’s Club Singles to get under way on time.
Jim Jennings got a head start on Craig Taylor, with Taylor admitting he thought his journey was over.
He rallied and at the 18-12 mark, and Taylor mastered the wind and took the win at 25-20.
Tony ‘TK’ King and Niels Hilton fought it out in the other game, with Hilton out bowling TK.
After just 90 minutes, Hilton was announced the other contender for champion, with 25-12.
The Women’s Singles Championships semi finals were played last Thursday.
Chris Frampton defeated Sandra Hill 25-10, and Jo Chick defeated Lyn Hardcastle 25-15.
The finals of both women;s and men’s will be played this Saturday.
Good luck to all.
Social Bowls
With so much going on at this time of the season, let’s not forget about the RSL Diggers Social Bowls Christmas Ham Bonanza.
Last Thursday, Brian Clancy and Glenys Chessells were the lucky winners - congratulations.
Two lucky players will be drawn again at Social Bowls this week to win a delicious ham each.
With only one more draw to go, head down to the RSL greens by 12.30pm on Thursday.
It is only $10 to play social bowls, with or without footwear.
Join an afternoon of fun in a very welcoming atmosphere.
Diggers Christmas raffle tickets are still available for purchase, with five prizes to be drawn on this Thursday.
Midweek Pennant
Today in Midweek Pennant, the RSL Diggers host Kyabram in the last round before the Christmas recess.
Round 10 is the Charity Round, and all bowlers are encouraged by the Bendigo Campaspe Goldfield Bowls Region to “wear Christmas” to raise money for the cancer ward at Echuca Hospital.
The Diggers will hold raffles, issue fines and have a sausage sizzle after the game to do their bit for this great cause.
Kyabram are second on the Campaspe Playing Area Midweek ladder with 102 points.
RSL are sitting 4th and are unlikely to change position no matter the outcome today, but will indeed be invested in winning this round.
Today’s teams are as follows:
L Hardcastle, A Webster, R Marchetti, R Reid (s); A Hodges, J Wilson, P Thommers, C Taylor (s); G Gordon, J Jennings, N Austin, N Hilton (s). Emergencies: C Frampton, J Chick.
