Echuca holds off late Tatura surge

Echuca has begun its Goulburn Valley League netball season on the right note by holding off a fourth-quarter surge to defeat Tatura.

Entering the season opener under the tutelage of new coach Bronwyn Slater and aiming for a finals return, Echuca was keen to make an early statement against the 2025 finalist at Echuca South Recreation Reserve.

The second quarter was much more even, Tatura edging the period 10-8 and trimming the margin to 28-17 at half-time.

The two sides split the goals in the third term, scoring seven each as Echuca maintained its 11-goal buffer heading into the final 15 minutes.

Slater would contend with some nerves throughout the final quarter in her pursuit of a first win in charge of the A-grade outfit.

Tatura scored 13 goals in the fourth, with Echuca only providing five in response, as the Murray Bombers’ strong start to the match eventually paid dividends in a thrilling 40-37 victory.

Echuca faces Benalla on Saturday, April 11 from 2.15pm, which will be looking to avenge an opening defeat to Seymour, with the action set to take place at Tongala Recreation Reserve.
