Close to 600 people descended on the Cobram Sports Stadium for the event, with 11 fights on the card, including Cobram’s very own Marcus ‘Dangerous’ Davis as the main event.
The night was a great success, with two exhibition fights followed by nine competitive fights and organiser Scott Maskell said he was blown away with how it turned out.
“It was way bigger than I expected, I only expected to sell 10 tables but there was like 600 people,” Maskell said.
“It was pretty crazy.”
In the ring it was a great evening of action, with Steve Brooks putting on a great display of boxing and showmanship to take home the Leigh Maskell Cup as fighter of the night.
Cobram’s Marcus Davis retained his Victorian Light Welterweight title in the main event after defeating his opponent Bezhad Molavi, while Shaun Robbins took out his fight in one of the other highlights of the night.
“I’m hoping to have another one by the end of the year now because this one went pretty good,” Maskell said.
“The next one will be towards the end of the year some time, I haven’t got it on my calendar yet.”
The fight night was the first organised by Maskell, with the passionate boxer thanking the community, including Adam Gatcum at the Cobram Sports Stadium, for their hard work.
“All of the community helped, if it wasn’t for the community it would not have happened,” Maskell said.
“A lot of help from Taylor Hocking, Jordan Robbins, lots of people.”
Boxing since he was 12, Maskell has owned a gym for six years, with his brother, dad and grandfather all participating in the sport.
He said that seeing the success of the night was not only good for local boxing, but good for boxing in regional Victoria.
“It’s great having boxing up in the country because the other mob keep it all in Melbourne, all for themselves, so we’re actually starting to get it up into the country now which is really good,” Maskell said.
