The Tigers had a chance to move up to third place with a victory, but it was the Magpies who triumphed by 23 points north of the border.
The home side Moama gained the ascendancy after a tight opening half, edging ahead to be up 8.6 (54) to 4.7 (31) when the final siren sounded.
The Tigers led by three points after a hard-fought opening quarter, but they struggled to hit the scoreboard after that.
After scoring two goals in the first stanza, the Tigers only managed two more goals for the rest of the game as Moama kicked seven majors of its own to slowly pull away to victory.
A win would have seen Cobram open up a two-game advantage over Moama, but instead the defeat means the yellow-and-black are now in the thick of the battle for the top six.
Cobram is one of four teams to have registered five wins so far this season, alongside Moama, Nathalia and Barooga.

Those sides sit just four points behind Numurkah in third and four points ahead of Finley in eighth spot.
Luca Allen kicked two goals for Cobram, with Matthew DeMaio and Thomas McShane the other Tigers to hit the scoreboard.
Allen, Samuel Beasley, Ryan Mele, Kyle Coates, Matteo Allen and Harry Beasley were all named among the best for Cobram.
Mitchell Lake, Thomas Sheldon and Stuart Taylor all had two majors for the Magpies.
With nine games of footy now under its belt, Cobram will finally have a chance to rest with a bye in round 10.
The Tigers are the second-to-last team in the Murray Football League to have a bye this season, but it will be the perfect chance for the side to rest and recover ahead of a huge clash against Barooga on Saturday, June 10.
On the netball court, Cobram could not pick up its third win for the year after falling to Moama 51-31.
The Tigers had back-to-back wins in rounds two and three, but have been defeated in their last six games since then.
Cobram will have a chance to record that third win when it takes on Barooga, one of the teams it has already defeated in 2023.
