Cobram hosted a special event last Wednesday evening, the Fallons Cobram-sponsored Ladies’ Twilight Triples `Starry Starry Night’.

A total of 12 teams with players from Barooga, Cobram, Finley, Numurkah, Numurkah Golf and Tocumwal arrived adorned with stars and Christmas-themed clothing. Unfortunately, these were soon covered with jumpers and jackets as the southerly wind was very cold.
Dinner was enjoyed between games two and three.
At the end of the night there were three teams having won all three games, but the local team of Annette Temple, Marj Carlisle and Carol Doherty were three points clear and accepted their prize from Fallons representative Allan Warfe. A countback was needed to decide second place which went to another Cobram team, comprising Jeanette Liersch, Marj McDonald and Jenny Warfe.
Due to generous sponsorship from Fallons Cobram, prizes were also awarded to best first game, best third game, an encouragement award to a losing team in game two, as well as a randomly drawn lead, third and skip.
The evening was deemed a resounding success.
Thursday’s rain prevented the playing of the final of the club’s ladies’ pairs, which has been rescheduled for Thursday, December 16.
Tuesday’s 2-4-2 pairs was won by Laurie Vinecombe and Joy Mynard, with runners-up Marj Carlisle and Tracey Emery.
Friday Pennant was not a great day for either division.
Division 1 travelled to Finley and the rink win by Marj McDonald’s four against Tracey Miles could not counter the large losses inflicted by Karen Peacock and Nan Smith on the other rinks. Both of those Finley skips had a day out.
Division 2 had a first — travelling to Katandra West, which is back playing in the Murray Area after a few years playing in GV.
Cobram found the carpet under the shadecloth too big a challenge and again the rink win by Carol Mathers couldn’t cover the other two losses.
To cover absences on Saturday, 21 players from Friday backed up to play again which allowed us to field our five sides, and for four sides to bring home the game points.
Cobram’s Division 1 Saturday side visited Strathmerton not only for their round six fixture, but also with the added incentive of defending the Frank Dunkley Shield. The day dished out perfect conditions as well as the Strathmerton Bowling Club producing yet another fantastic playing surface.
With Greg Dunn out of the team for a week and Allan McDonald having his eye operated on (he seems to think that he could see his bowls getting close!), there were a couple of changes to previous Cobram rinks. This did not have any effect on how well the side played however, with two rinks scoring heavy wins and the third rounding out a great day, scoring maximum points. John Dixon was up against a former Cobram Tiger in Wayne (Willie) Nelson, with the Cobram rink dishing out a lesson in lawn bowls and a very tidy 35-shot win.
While not winning by as much, Steve Tatnall’s rink did turn out a big winner by 21 shots against Mick Ryan and also managed to pick up an elusive 8 along the way. Ross Smith continued with his form, producing another very good performance at third. Dane Gade continued on his winning way, however his opponent in Peter Young did make things a little more difficult for the Tigers. They still managed to turn in a nine-shot rink win and keep the winning record for ‘Boots’ at Cobram intact.
There will be another test for the Division 1 side next week in a 1 verses 4 encounter with close rival Barooga.
Meanwhile, the Cobram greens were full with four sides playing at home.
In Division 2 it was a rematch of last year’s grand final against Wunghnu. Cobram welcomed back Mal Beer following a lay-off with hand issues that have been corrected with surgery. So, this was a new combination that took on Jimmy Solanki and, after coming back to level the scores at the 15th end, Cobram was one shot up going into the final end, and Wunghnu was restricted to a single shot to tie the game.
On another tight rink where Pat Quinane battled with Les Clark, Wunghnu took the game by three shots.
On the third rink Colin McDonald’s team again put on a relentless performance over Michael Williams’ crew, only allowing them to score on five ends. It would have been a comfort to the other rinks to see the Cobram total continuing to grow to take the rink by 16 shots.
Division 3 played Tocumwal Golf’s number three side and managed that elusive win with the game points and two rinks. Keith Faulkner’s team was not able to match the bowls in the head from Alan Jones and crew, and got stuck on multiple ends without scoring. Without a 6 scored early in the game, Keith’s deficit might have been bigger.
Andrew (Rusha) Rushby and team battled with Ben Gierveld’s squad. Sue Carter in her first pennant season put in some handy lead bowls. On the 15th end Cobram came from behind with a five-shot end, but only finally cemented the win with seven shots in the final two ends.
Meanwhile on the third rink, stand-in skip Glenn Murphy’s team playing against Sue Hodge kept the scoreboard ticking over in Cobram’s favour with all players contributing to finish the day 17 shots up.
We keep seeing something special in Division 4. Cobram 4 played Tocumwal Golf 4 where they introduced us to a concept that keeps older/less mobile players in the game. Allan Seamer and Wal Atkins shared the lead position in Peter Enever’s team.
Allan and Wal were not required to walk the length of the green as they played alternate ends. What a great way to keep bowlers involved in the game they love. Both Cobram rinks were too strong and brought maximum points home.
Cobram 5 (still in Division 4) met Berrigan 3. It was a different Berrigan side than the one that Cobram 4 defeated last round, but this time Glenda Mann’s plus 13 against Myles Humphries was not enough to cover Jim Burkitt’s deficit against Bill Daly. Denise Stanbridge bowled well as lead for Mann, and picked the pace of the green well.
There’s only one round before our short mid-season break, so another opportunity to consolidate ladder positions.
