The Cobram local competed in the 60th Australian Barefoot Water Ski Championships, held in Mulwala from March 23 to 27.
More than 90 skiers were involved across the week, with people aged from 10 to 77 years old coming from across the nation to participate.
It was Sullivan’s 34th national championships, and the skier proved he’s still got plenty left in the tank, winning gold in the 65+ Tricks and Slalom categories to take out his 19th overall Australian title.
“It (the 34 appearances) is a record, there’s one bloke who is one behind me,” Sullivan said.
“It was pretty special to win for the 60th event, because I had been to the 25th one and the 50th.
“I think it’s just an addiction.
“I had four years off, after the 2014 nationals I went up north and fell down a river bank and broke my neck so I had four years off.”
Sullivan, who has since recovered from the injury, explained the breakdown of barefoot skiing, with three events: slalom, tricks and jumps making up the competition, however older participants are not allowed to jump.
He said barefoot skiing was a family affair, with Brian and son Dion helping each other progress on the water over the years.
“My son used to ski and he used to drive us but he hasn’t skied for two or three years now so I only get to train about five times a year,” he said.
“He's probably the reason I’ve stayed in it so long, he got pretty wrapped up in it so we drove the boat and helped coach one another.“
It was a big week at the Max Kirwan Ski Park, with a 60th reunion dinner held, along with a night jump, with Queensland taking out the overall team award and Victoria the juniors.
