Like many things in Seymour and district, the community radio station would not exist without the tireless and thankless hours put in by local volunteers.
“It costs more than $30,000 to keep things running when nothing goes wrong,” vice-president Greg Sharp said.
“Nothing is cheap when you’re dealing with radio equipment. If the volunteers weren’t involved Seymour FM wouldn’t exist, it’s as simple as that.
“We’re very grateful for everyone who gives up their time to keep the station afloat. It’s an important asset for the town and we want to see it continue into the future.”
Mr Sharp said the longevity of the station relied on attracting younger volunteers.
“We’re all going to fall off the perch at some point. We need some fresh faces to get excited about the radio,” he said.
“It’s a great training ground for people to go on to careers in commercial radio. Many of the big names started in small stations like Seymour FM.
“No skills are required, all you need is some enthusiasm. We are happy to teach people.
“Once they come into the studio, most people realise it looks a lot more complicated than it is. There’s a lot of knobs and dials but you pick it up pretty quickly.”
