Man had two firearm sight scopes and cannabis

Police found two firearm sight scopes at a man’s house despite him being prohibited from possessing firearms, a court has heard.

Justin White, 34, of Caniambo, pleaded guilty in Shepparton Magistrates’ Court to possessing a firearm-related item while a firearm prohibition order applied, possessing cannabis and committing an indictable offence while on bail.

Prosecutor Senior Constable Luke Lund told the court police found two firearm telescopic sights in White’s bedroom as well as cannabis in his lounge and dining rooms when they searched his home on February 4.

White told police at the time that one scope was a “bolt-on attachment for his compound bow” while the other was a “toy” one, Sen Constable Lund said.

The prosecutor said police spoke to a gun shop owner, who told them the scope was “not for use on a compound bow” Sen Constable Lund said.

The court heard there was a firearm prohibition order made on White a month earlier and he was on bail at the time of the offence.

White’s solicitor said her client was trying to get the firearm prohibition order removed by the Victorian Civil Administrative Tribunal and that the cannabis belonged to a housemate.

White was fined $750 by the magistrate and ordered to pay $750 in court costs.
