Wattle day blooms at Blake Reserve

The wattle and other natives were blooming for the celebrations.

Wattle Day was celebrated last Sunday in spring sunshine amongst the various wattles in bloom at the Blake Botanic Reserve of West Deniliquin.

Reserve volunteer Judy Bond said a wide range of participants - aged from 12 to 90 years, and one dog - enjoyed delicious food themed in colours of green, gold and brown.

“The children were especially intrigued with the reproduction of an mia-mia shelter constructed by Yarkuwa rangers with Edward Public School pupils,” Mrs Bond said.

“Recent rains have produced profuse flowering of other natives there, like Hakea leucoptera, Needlewood and Olearia pimeleoides, Showy Daisy Bush.

“The air was full of bird and frog calls.”

The reserve is a volunteer project which has beautified an area of native bush land around the Deniliquin Kolety Lagoons.

It was originally a community project involving the then Deniliquin Council, Southern Riverina Field Naturalists Club and nearby residents, and volunteers are now supported by Deniliquin Kolety Lagoons Landcare Group and Edward River Council.
