December 1 might signal the start of the year’s merriest month, but Cobram-Barooga Soroptimist is encouraging locals to take part in the annual state-to-state walk on that day to help stamp out an unspeakable atrocity somehow still present today - domestic violence.

As part of the United Nations 16 days of activism campaign, people will unite at Barooga community hall to embark on a scenic trek through the bush, finishing up at Cobram’s Thompsons Beach for a free breakfast put on by Cobram Lions Club.
The message behind the walk is clear.
“The walk aims to bring attention to the incidents of domestic violence and raise awareness that is not okay to be violent to anyone,” Cobram-Barooga Soroptomist program co-ordinator Kay Morgan said.
White Ribbon Australia’s statistics reveal domestic and family violence is the leading cause of homelessness for women and children; on average one woman a week is murdered by her current or former partner; almost 40 per cent of women continued to experience violence from their partner while temporarily separated; and one in three people do not think controlling someone is a form of violence.
Anyone interested in taking part in the walk can book on the day or visit TryBooking.
Tickets are $10 a person or $25 a family, with all proceeds going towards the Marian Community (Moira Family Violence Crisis Centre), as well as the ‘Feed the Farmers’ campaign.
