The exemption came into play at noon on June 7, signed off by the NSW Health Minister Brad Hazzard.
Victorian and NSW residents who live in a border community do not need to apply for a permit to travel between the two states if they stay within the border region.
This exception applies if the Victorian resident has not been to a place in Victoria that is outside the border region in the previous 14 days and does not travel anywhere in NSW other than the border region.
Residents are required to hold their driver's licence while travelling to prove their residential address.
Regional Victoria's lockdown lifted on June 4, but Victorian residents in the border region had to follow the state's stay-at-home rules when entering NSW, only travelling for four reasons — work, exercise, good and services and care and compassionate reasons.
In NSW, it is not mandatory to wear a face mask but it is recommended in situations where it is difficult to physically distance such as on public transport or indoors at a public place.
In Victoria, face masks are required indoors and face masks are required outdoors where physical distancing of at least 1.5 m cannot be maintained.
