Tobacco bust on High St

A Cobram man has been arrested and almost 30,000 illicit cigarettes seized from a Cobram store.

Police from the Viper Taskforce executed a warrant at an address on Cobram’s High St at 1.35pm on Wednesday, March 5 .

Police said more than 27,000 illicit cigarettes were seized, as well as $10,000 in cash, 646 e-cigarettes and about 7kg of illicit loose-leaf tobacco.

Police will allege the store is connected to an organised crime syndicate involved in the sale of illicit tobacco.

The action was part of an ongoing investigation into the sale of illicit tobacco in regional Victoria.

A 29-year-old Cobram man was charged with multiple offences including knowingly possessing or conveying tobacco products with the intent to defraud the revenue, recklessly possessing or conveying tobacco products with the intent to defraud the revenue, and dealing with property suspected to be the proceeds of crime.

He was bailed to appear at Shepparton Magistrates’ Court on June 30.
