Sweet, ‘different’ business opens in heart of Seymour

Ahmed, who manages the store with his brothers, said the first week or so of business had been successful, and he was anticipating the store would get even busier in the near future.

“A lot of kids have come in, and they’re happy with the shop,” he said.

“It’s going well. It’s school holidays now so it gets a little bit quiet, but when school comes back we’re hoping it gets busier.”

Inside the Station St store, located beside Gaffney’s Pie Kitchen, customers will find a colourful display of sweets and candies.

Ahmed said the relatively short set-up process was aided by the brothers’ trades backgrounds.

“It took us just under two weeks (to set up),” he said.

“We did all of the work. We’re chippies full time so whatever you see in the shop, we’ve done it all.”

After moving to a Northwood farm in 2019, the local gap in the market for a store like Station Street Snacks quickly became evident to the Alhamd family.

The store stocks sweets that can often only be found in metro areas or online.

“In the area, there’s not much like this for the kids, so we just wanted to do something different,” Ahmed said.

“The snacks we have here — the American snacks — you won’t find them anywhere unless you travel to Melbourne. We’ve got everything here, you don’t need to go anywhere else.”

As we move into the warmer months, the store is set to stock ice cream, and Ahmed hopes that they’ll also soon introduce more sweet varieties.

With it being a family business, Ahmed said Station Street Snacks was all about contributing something new to the community.

“We’re a family business, so we’re not really greedy about money,” he said.

“Whatever it makes, it makes. Whatever we take home, we’re happy.”

Station Street Snacks is currently open seven days a week from 9am to 7pm.
