Seymour Police are keen for the community to take steps to secure their number plates, with thefts on the rise.
Offenders use stolen plates to avoid identification when committing serious offences such as petrol theft, drug trafficking and burglary.
A Police spokesperson said you can help prevent offences, and avoid the inconvenience and cost of replacing your number plates, by securing them with one-way, anti-theft screws.
These can be fitted with a standard flat-bladed screwdriver.
It is also recommended you park your car in a secure place – off the street in a garage or carport where possible.
You can secure your plates with the assistance of police at SafePl8 sites. They will supply and fit the anti-theft screws for you free of charge.
Follow your local police Eyewatch page on Facebook to keep up-to-date with upcoming events where this is offered.
Alternatively you can ask your local car dealership, service centre or your local automotive supplier about one-way screws.
An installation fee may apply.
If you’re a victim of number plate theft, call the Police Assistance Line on 131 444 and make a report.
If you see something suspicious, contact your local police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
