Triple M in Shepparton recently had Hungie Fangs create a pie for the AFL grand final.
Hungie Fangs staff gathered community feedback for what flavour to make and the bacon cheese beef pie became extremely popular.
That's when it was decided to enter the pie in the Great Aussie Pie Competition, along with a few other flavours.
“We struck gold, didn't we?”
The bakery won gold awards for its bacon cheese beef, honey mustard chicken and pepper pies.
The bakery's sausage roll also came third in Australia — the best in Victoria.
Owners Lina Galati and Damian Gow were unable to attend the judging due to the coronavirus pandemic.
“We made fresh pies, had to snap freeze them, pack them and they were taken by TNT Courier to Sydney,” Mr Gow said.
“It was fantastic because it was live streamed so we got to see them judge the pies.
“They bring out their results late at night at 9.30 pm or 10 pm and for us bakers, that's a long wait for the day, but it was well worth it in the end.”
Incredible flavours were showcased at the event, including a crocodile and cricket pie and an emu flavoured pie.
Mr Gow said the aim for entering the competition was to bring more visitors to Cobram.
“All the ingredients that we source are local and that's what makes it special too, they appreciate winning the awards as well,” he said.
This is the first year the competition has included the category of Christmas mince pie and a silver award was given to Hungie Fangs.
Earlier in the year, Hungie Fangs also took gold award for its meat and veggie pastie through the Australian Pie and Pastie Competition.
The owners plan to enter the Great Aussie Pie Competition again in 2021.
